From Cory McCoy: My student investigation into handling of sexual assault reports brought change

Name: Cory McCoy

College Newspaper: Tyler Junior College Drumbeat

Where I Am Now: Tyler Morning Telegraph/ Multimedia Journalist

While at my student newspaper I began an investigation into the way the campus reported sexual assaults. I continued covering the mishandling of crimes and miscategorization of crimes on the annual Clery Crime and Safety Report.

Over five years, the investigation resulted in corrections to two years of Clery reports with a third likely to come this year (according to the DoE’s Clery officer’s review of a case). The campus also restructured how it handles its police department and brought in a former FBI field supervisor to oversee its campus safety.

I also just took home the Texas APME First place in Freedom of Information reporting at the 2018 banquet.

This investigation began at my student newspaper and over five years has had marked change on campus.
